Madhur Jaffrey, is an Indian-born actress, food and travel writer and famous TV personality. She got famous from her debut cookbook ‘An Invitation to Indian cooking’, published in the year 1973, in which she introduces Indian cuisine to the western world.

Career:

1950-1969: She was pursuing college in Delhi and even during her college days, she was interested in acting and she has acted in Hamlet, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Comedy of Errors. In 1951, she joined Unity Theatres and performed plays. In 1955, she was cast in one act play, Auto-de-Fe and by seeing her performance British Council in India offered her a scholarship. She was in London and she found the restaurants food quality to be poor and asked her mother for recipes. And the first recipe she tried was potato with cumin. She became a freelance writer for food and travel magazines, in order to support her children, after her marriage collapsed in late 1960’s.

Cooking: She is the author of cookbooks on Indian, Asian cuisines. She has also presented Indian cookery, a TV show in 1982. In 1989, she presented Far Eastern Cookery and in 1995, she presented Flavours of India. Her cookbooks were also a huge success and she developed a mass-marketed cooking sauces. She was also hired by BBC to present a show on Indian Cooking. In 1986, Dawat restaurant was opened in Manhattan using her recipes.
