Subrata Roy, is a well-known Indian Businessman, who owns the Sahara India. He has founded the Sahara India, in the year 1978 and holds ownership of ‘London’s Grosvenor House, New York’s Plaza Hotel, Force India etc. In the year 2012, he has been named as one of the 10 Most Powerful People of India. He was taken in custody and spends some time in Tihar Jail, in 2014.

Career:

He started his career with the Sahara Finance, in the year 1978, which was struggling financially. He took over it and changed the financial model of the chit fund. In 1990, he moved to Lucknow and made that his base and he launched the Sahara project covering over 170 acres. It developed to become one of the India’s largest conglomerate, with an interest in diversified business like, ‘Real estate, Media, Entertainment, Tourism, Healthcare etc’. Subrata, has also received an honorary doctorate in business leadership from ‘University of East London’.

In 2014, Subrata was arrested and sent to Tihar jail, on charges of failing to refund to the investors. However, he was granted bail for a short period of time. In addition to that, Supreme Court has recently ordered Subrata to pay INR 1500 crore before June 15, else they warned him that, he will land in jail once again.
