Geetha Johri, is a newly appointed Gujarat DGP and an IPS officer of 1982 batch. She is the first woman IPS officer and she is also named as the first woman to take over the state’s DGP. She has taken over PP Pandey, who is now a former DGP of Gujarat.
Geetha, became famous when she raided mafia don ‘Abdul Latif’s hideout, in Ahmedabad, in the year 1992 and arrested the henchman Sharif Khan. She has also filed a FIR in Supreme Court, for the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and disappearance of his wife. This case led to the arrest of 13 police officers including 3 IPS officers.
She has also faced CBI questioning for not communicating the progress in the case, that has been submitted to the Supreme Court. The court expressed displeasure in the failure of the state police’s Investigation team under Johri, to identify seven Andhra Pradesh police, who assisted local police during fake encounter. As a result of this, CBI believes that Johri has destroyed some crucial document regarding the case.
However, appreciating her hard work, she was promoted as DGP, in April 2015. During this period she was serving as Managing Director of Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation.
