CareerIn year 1946, she along with her husband Kamal Roy, responded to an advertisement in a Gujarati newspaper about opportunity to work in the movies. Nirupa Roy started working in Gujarati movies first and then in Hindi movies. She worked with legends like Bharat Bhushan, Balraj Sahni and Ashok Kumar. She had played mostly the role of mother in many Hindi movies and the movie Deewar was the one where she played the famous mother of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. Her roles were heart-felt and her acting made the audience cry. Nirupa Roy was called as ‘queen of misery’. In her 50 years of career, she had acted in nearly 275 movies in movies and she had won many awards and recognitions. Some of her famous movies are Waqt, Gopi, Ram aur Sham, Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar and many more.

Kokila changed her name to Nirupa when she started acting in the movies. With support of her husband she started her career in the movies successfully. She had two sons Yogesh and Kiran. She was died of cardiac arrest in Mumbai on 13th October 2004.
