Rabi Ray, was an Indian politician, a Gandhian, a Socialist, a Speaker of Lok Shaba and a former Union Minister. He was a member of the Socialist party in 1948 and later he joined in Samyukta Socialist Party. He has also been a member of the Janata Party and Janata Dal Party.
In 1947, when Rabi Ray was pursuing college, he was arrested by the British Government, for unfurling the National Flag in his college. However, was later released due to students demand. He believed in the Socialism and soon after finishing his college, he joined Socialist Party. Due to his leadership qualities and deep commitment in the Socialist Issue, he always stood in front of any movements. During 1953-1954, he served as the Joint Secretary in All India Samajwadi Yuvak Sabha. Subsequently, in 1960, he became the General Secretary of the party.
In 1967, he was elected as the member of the Lok Shaba from Orissa. Following that, in 1974, he was elected as the member of the Rajya Shaba from Orissa and he completed his term in Rajya Shaba in the year 1980. In 1989, he was elected as the 9th Lok Shaba member from Orissa, as a Janata Dal candidate. On October 19, 1989, he was named as the Speaker of the Lok Shaba unanimously. Since 1997, he has been a member of the non-political organization, Lok Shakti Abhiyan.
