Kishori Amonkar, is an Indian classical vocalist, who is considered to be one of the Hindustani traditional singers and an innovator of the Jaipur Gharana. She is a classical Khyal performer and she also performs in other classical genres Thumri and bhajan. She is considered to be one of the representatives of the Hindustani classical music.

She was initially trained by her mother ‘Mogubhai Kurdikar’. In her initial stages, she accompanied her mother in her performances. She began her vocal lessons, in the year 1940’s and she got trained in Hindustani classical music. She works in light music, combined her classical singing and she modified her Jaipur gharana, by applying the styles from other gharanas. She was both appreciated and criticized for the pushing the boundaries of the Jaipur tradition.

In 2010, she published a book in Marathi, titled Swaraartha Ramani, in which she elaborated her views on musical theory and practice. She has also created many compositions for number of ragas. Amonkar is also a well known speaker and traveled throughout India and made a speech on rasa. Kishori, passed away on April 3, 2017, one week before her 85th birthday, at her residence.
