Michaella McCollum is a model, public speaker, author, Instagram star and social media influencer. She is famous for being one of the individuals of the pair known as Peru Two. Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid are known as Peru Two because they were arrested by the Peru police for smuggling drugs in 2013.
Early life
Michaella McCollum was born on 28th June 1994 in Dungannon, Northern Ireland. The names of her parents are not known but as per sources her father is a businessman and mother is a homemaker. Michaella has two siblings, a brother and a sister, however their names are not known.
Michaella McCollum attended a local school and graduated from the state University in Northern Ireland. She is an Irish national of mixed ethnicity and is an adherent of the Christian faith.
Career
Michaella McCollum worked as a hairstylist in a saloon and later became a server at a cafe in Ibiza. At this point, she met a street pharmacist named Davey who offered her the job of pirating cocaine for extra income which she accepted. Subsequently, Michaella travelled to Majorca and met Melissa Reid. The two ladies then went to Lima in Peru where they were given the drugs to smuggle.
On 6th August 2013, Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid were arrested by the Peru police at the Jorge Chavez International Airport for attempting to smuggle 12 kilograms of cocaine in their luggage. The cocaine worth 2 million euros was hidden in porridge bundles. The two immediately came to the limelight following their arrest and got the title of Peru Two.
Michaella McCollum along with Melissa Reid faced the prospect of 15 years in prison but were sentenced to 6 years and 8 months of imprisonment in December 2014. Both were incarcerated in Virgen de Fatima prison in Lima but later shifted to Ancon 2 jail. Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid were released in the year 2016.
Michaella McCollum appeared in the documentary “Brits Behind Bars: Cocaine Smugglers” along with Melissa Reid which aired on 10th October 2015. The documentary gave her global publicity. She wrote a book “You’ll Never See Daylight Again” based on her experience in the prison. Michaella also appeared in a Netflix documentary in 2022.
